HELM they take me. Sure, you have an audience for the TV taping. But you can’t play to those people. You play to the camera. “It’s really as though you don’t have an audience. The camera must be your audience. Oh, maybe I play a little to the audience because it’s there. But, mainly, it’s the camera. She can’t help a small amount of reciprocity even with the TV audience, as sealed off as it is by the presence of the camera. There are, of course, people on the set. Imaginatively, she has an electricity going with them. “In TV,” she said, “you use the director’s vibe* and your mood and the orchestra’s mood. You have to use your imagination and create an audience. “With an audience, outside of television, I always have an idea how I’m doing. But it’s hard to judge when you’re playing to the camera. I listen to the choreographer and others running the show. And they don’t look at me. They look at the monitors. The song, the dance and the skit will develop with a background of an apartment house in which Moore is supposed to be a tenant. The stoop of the house, the roof and various apartments will furnish the sites — or, if you prefer, sights — for the antics and exercises of the residents. Jean Stapleton of All In The Family and Moms Mabley provide an opening tandem of guests. Clifton Davis will collaborate as the other major energizer of the show. 6 Davis is a versatile talent. Songsmith as well as actor, he has cavorted as Valentine in the Broadway musical, Two Gentlemen of Verona, which recently lured a Tony. Also recurrent will be comic Timmy Rogers and impressionists of a humorous turn, Rob Carey and Dick Libertini. Liz Torres, too, is a committed regular, vocally and comedically. Rogers, the superintendent of the house, has Moore, Davis and the rest to banter with as tenants. If you didn’t know it, Archie Bunker’s wife Edith has a thrushlike side to her. Stapleton will demonstrate with a solo, I Met Him In Boston. Moore and dancer Mildred Lane have taken up the task of tutoring Stapleton to bounce through certain rock steps at which Archie would no doubt frown. Melba, as a consequence of her problems with TV’s lens, probably has discovered something about the problems inside a recording studio and perhaps something can be done to rectify them. “I’ve wondered why my recordings aren’t as good as I’d like them to be,” Moore said. “I think it’s because I’m uptight in a studio. I could relate the TV experience to the recording studio. You have to ifhagine your audience. That should be of assistance in both places. Moore is in the position where she has an opportunity to become a woman for three seasons. She’s a summer replacement with Davis now. But, if they’re sufficiently impressive — and Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY that means in the arithmetic of the ratings — they could join CBS for fall, winter and spring. That was, you remember, the springboard Sonny and Cher employed to join the CBS agenda. They kidded and sang their way through last summer and, when the inevitable cancellations cleared a niche for them, they joined the schedule in the winter. “Sometimes,” said Melba, “I think I must be crazy to be doing all of these things. But, then, I know I’m being foolish about it. When I’m happy now, I’m so-o-o happy. And, when I’m unhappy, I’m not really that unhappy. “I used to have bad depressions. I haven’t had them fora while. Emotionally, I’ve improved. I’m doing constructive things. I feel like I’m adjusting sensibly. I’m in love and have a security blanket. I’m taking things in my stride now. Melba recalls when she was vastly troubled. She was consulting an analyst then. That was before she discovered that security blanket in Davis. “He’s the guy,” Moore said. “I haven’t had to go to my shrink that often. When I went, he asked me, ‘What do you think of your boy friend? What do you think of yourself as a person? As a black person? It did me good. I have less need for the shrink now. Moore, who has a way with a gospel song, sounded as though she was about to give out with one of those joyous hallelujahs. Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY
