nelson continued (Left to right) Ed Nelson, Percy Rodrigues and Linda Day star in 'The Silent Force' premiering in September.- 6 Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKIY People are curious about what celebrities think about everything, from politics to toothpaste. Because of this public attitude, people in the entertainment business have a responsibility to use care when voicing their opinions and also, when they know little of a subject, they must have the courage to admit it. Sometimes people look with a jaundiced eye at the actor who engages in some charitable effort, saying “He's only doing it for the publicity.” In most cases, nothing could be farther from the truth. For example, when an actor makes an appearance at a small, local children's hospital, affecting only the immediate community in which he lives, and in which he doesn’t need any publicity, he does it strictly in the hope it will benefit the hospital. Maybe with his picture or his name they will get a little extra publicity. But no Hollywood producer is going to hire an actor for a role as a result of the charitable work he has done or the number of times his picture’s been in the local paper. In other instances, a local appear-' ance sometimes increases the "gate" and helps raise more money because citizens came to see an actor as well as hear a local dignitary give a speech. Again, it’s participating that’s important. If you live in an area and you merely take from it all the services in the community, without ever contributing something, you are living a negative life. I feel obligated to my community. I want to pay back, in some measure, what it’s given me. I’d like to feel that after I’ve gone, or moved away, that my community and the people in it were helped because I had been there and a part of it. I know only too well that some of the tasks I get involved in are considerably less than important in the one sense, but even more important to me in another—like serving on the PTA, or helping the scouts. I was president of the high school boosters club. 1 took my turn working in the concession stand at the football games, and 1 loved it. I'mjust as active in the national and state political scene as I am in local activities, be they charitable, law enforcement-oriented, or especially youth-oriented. The point is you have to be active in life. So many young people today are afraid of life. They know so much about the ills of the world. They are afraid to get involved. I’ve tried to instill a feeling of responsibility in my six children, not responsibility for the past but to the future. They seem to care, and maybe . in part, it’s because my wife, Patsy, and 1 try to. We try to live as full a life as possible and this is possible only when you’re involved in life. The fulfillment that comes from the full life —within the framework of legality, morality and ethics, is the GOOD life. As an actor, I have one very valuable plus that many others in other professions don’t have. I have more time to become involved, more than the 9 to 5 man. But I believe these people too must take time —sometime-— for the community, no matter in how small a way. To recapture the feeling of national pride, we must start.on the local level; with our neighbors, our own town, and work upward from there. Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY
