Burt Lancaster shows a “fake” picture of Lee Harvey Oswald to Robert Ryan in Executive Action. rt.oo Assassination is target for Executive Actions high-powered plot The passion to question the Warren Commission’s findings on President Kennedy’s assassination lingers on. Executive Action, a provocative film, released by National General Pictures, is a speculative documentary that dramatizes one of many conspiracy theories about the death of John F. Kennedy. Burt Lancaster stars as a maverick intelligence mastermind hired by three right-wing millionaires (Robert Ryan, Will Geer and John Anderson) united in their distrust of the Kennedy cult. Lancaster uses his expertise and their wealth to design a diabolic plot: Three Bay of Pigs veterans trained as sharpshooters will assassinate Kennedy while FBI informant Lee Harvey Oswald will be incriminated by evidence planted by an Oswald look-alike. The film counterpoints newsreel footage of Kennedy before the assassi-14 nation—playing with his children or speaking at the United Nations—with shots of the conspirators in action. One eerie scene shows the marksmen at a deserted rifle range shooting at dummies in an open limousine. Perhaps most terrifying is seeing Kennedy’s face in the cross hairs of a rifle scope. Released to coincide with the tenth anniversary of that dark day in November, Executive Action inspired heated controversy and five major metropolitan television stations banned advertisements for the picture, fearing they might trigger another assassination. The production of the film was shrouded in secrecy, with the producers fearful it would “never see the light of day.” The film skillfully splices documentary footage with convincing invention, leaving the viewer to determine where history ends and fantasy begi ns. LF. Stone's Weekly, Paperback Hero among the many features on HBO I.F. Stone’s Weekly profiles the life and work of this great journalist. Among the movies premiering this month on HBO are the story of a journalist who never stopped fighting in his search for the truth and a tale of the insanity of war. I.F. Stone's Weekly is the engrossing profile of a reporter who had been scorned by his colleagues for years but grew to become an established maverick. A practicing journalist since his teens, Stone worked alone during the 1950s and 1960s putting out his weekly newsletter with just the help of his wife. When he finally shut it down at the end of 1971 his subscribers numbered many of the leading figures in Washington. Stone’s philosophy was to pay attention to the facts and figures of official documents, not to speeches. By comparing what politicians were saying with their 12 Keir Dullea is a hockey player who would rather be a frontier marshal. past policies he graphically showed the hypocrisy of our government.
