The whirlpool of romance, politics and new <«jr The Pallisers “promises to provide six months of delicious television,” The New York Times said recently, and with the introduction of three new characters and a gala Christinas ball, episodes four through nine continue the grandeur of this lavish BBC/Time-Life production. Romantic entanglements deepen and politics plays a greater role this month, as Anthony Trollope’s Pallisers series unfolds on HBO. The three new characters introduced in December are Phineas Finn (Donal McCann), a handsome young rising Irish Member of Parliament, Lady Laura Standish (Anna Massey), a beautiful young woman who loves politics, and a rich Viennese widow, Madame Max (Marie) Goesler (Barbara Murray). Forced to marry Plantagenet Palliser at the start of the series, Glencora still pines for Burgo Fitzgerald and almost runs off with him in the fourth episode. 4 To save his marriage Planty, in the next episode, turns down the position he wants more than anything else—Chancellor of the Exchequer—and takes Glencora on a trip to the Continent. In episode six we learn that Glen-cora’s cousin Alice Vavasor has finally decided to marry the upright John Grey rather than her roguish cousin George Vavasor. This is also when we meet the three new characters. Plantagenet’s uncle the Duke of Omnium is instantly infatuated by Madame Max. Phineas Finn likewise falls in love with Lady Standish but she marries the wealthy but eccentric Robert Kennedy. Plantagenet finally fulfills his ambition in episode seven when he is named Chancellor. Phineas loses his seat in the House of Commons in episode eight and regains it in episode nine, when Lord Chiltern challenges him to a duel over the hand of Violet Effingham. The outcome of that duel and the fate of all the characters will be revealed, only on HBO, in the 17 episodes to come. Starting with episode six each new episode will premiere on Wednesday at 6:30 Eastern time. Every Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Eastern time the previous episode and the new episode will be shown. There will be a third showing of the week’s new episode each Sunday afternoon.
