Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY Continued “We had auditions in London. About 1400 girls showed up. We picked two of them —Wanda Bailey and Pauline Antony. We’ve brought them home with us. They’re now part of the Golddiggers. Garrison is merely being polite in using the editorial we. He was a committee of one in judging the attributes of those auditioned. To curious males reading this report —no, we don’t know how you get a job like that. Feldman was.also an acquisition in England and he also is now an import. Of course, Marty isn’t as pretty as the two girls from Britain but Garrison swears he’s funnier. Reilly’s most recent image, of course, has been that of the timid real estate operator, Claymore Gregg. He contributed some spirited fleshy slapstick to the ectoplasmic romancing of Hope Lange and her faithful spook, Edward Mulhare. The Golddiggers is a show laced with music. Charles Nelson isn’t inexperienced in this vein. His credits include assignments with How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying; Bye, Bye Birdie; and Hello, Dolly. In fact, there’s no end to his talents. He once did radio commercials for headache tablets. “They were highly successful,” said Reilly, “except that they didn’t sell any pills. So that we may be entirely on the square with you, it should be revealed that the nine shows weren’t shot in London strictly to enliven the TV scenery. This virtue was a bonus coincidental with savings on the budget. (TOP) The Golddiggers cavort in front of Tower Bridge. (LEFT) Comic Marty Feldman. (RIGHT) Singer Tommy Tune and Gold-digger Jacqueline Chidsey. “It was fun,” said Reilly, “but there was a problem. We didn’t have any cue cards. They finally rigged up a few for us. Maybe our introduction of cue cards will stick. It would be a help to their actors. The overture production. Hello, Hello, London, offers a musical tour of the cosmopolis that is the British capital. The girls have been given their head in the series —more specifically, their voices. All of them have a chance at sounding off solo. Reilly and the rest shed quite a bit of sweat in diligent concentration for nine weeks in London. It sort of evened things for the racket he’s had in a dozen guestings with Martin. “You show up and read the cue cards,” Reilly said. “That’s how to make a living. Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY Perhaps 25 percent of the material was filmed on location in London or within a perimeter of about 200 miles. Brighton and Blackpool served as backdrops outside of London. Picad-illy Circus, comparable to 42nd Street and Broadway in New York, is among the London sites, or sight, if you will. Garrison employed /ive directors on the nine shows, which were shot in as many weeks. Three directors worked at shooting the film on location, one stayed in the studio and another hacf charge of the rehearsal hall. The company had available a truck, the kind that’s a miniature studio tightly packaged. This was used to implement inspiration, sudden and otherwise.

Charles ^Nelson Reilly" How He Spent Dean Martin's Summer Vacation MORTON MOSS TV Editor Dean Martin, everybody’s favorite bar companion, is on a sabbatical, better known as a hiatus.to you delightful people out there in television land. But when the Golddiggers are here, can Martin be far behind? Obviously not. And the Golddiggers are here this week on NBC from 10 to 11 Thursday night. NBC, which tries to cultivate a reputation for entertainment innovation, has fallen right into line with the other networks in entitling the show Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers. This is so you’ll appreciate you’re watching the second-string and that the regular team will be back in September. It’s a promotional idea of recent origin that puts a stigma on the summer replacement. It has advanced irresistibly. We wish somebody would find the courage to resist. Nobody should ask, “Where are the dancing girls?” They’re the Gold-diggers—10 of them. They also sing — a song of sixpence and a bagful of additional tunes. Speaking of tunes, Tommy Tune will be part of the company and so, too, will comic Marty Feldman. Your host and participant in numerous sketches will be Charles Nelson Reilly, free to engage in these cartwheels and nip-ups now that The Ghost and Mrs. Muir has given up the ghost. To lend the Golddiggers a fresh aspect, they were transported to L.ondon and posed fetchingly against various English postcard backgrounds like Big Ben and The Tower of London. “We brought eight of the Golddiggers to England and we added two English girls there,” said Greg Garrison, executive producer and, by now, indubitably a specialist on the pulchritudinous lass. Los Angeles Hera Id-Examiner TV WEEKLY Charles Nelson Reilly joins the Golddiggers as host for Dean Martin's summer replaTV WEEKLY
