RALPH EDWARDS: MR. ‘NICE’ RETURNS TO TV By Barbara Zuanich Nice is an overused word. Anyone not worthy of an outstanding adjective before their name is usually referred to as a “nice person” in today’s vocabulary. But in the word’s original but forgotten context, in which it refers to someone “fastidious, refined, pleasing, properly modest and rare," according to Webster’s Dictionary, there is a man who can be truly called “nice”-Ralph Edwards. In fact, Edwards is close to being too nice. Based upon his success in both radio and television as an announcer, master of ceremonies and producer, one would expect him to be more egotistical, more hardened. But. he is soft-spoken and kindly. His eyes twinkle when he recalls the old days of radio. When talking of the future, he is optimistic and quotably humorous. He adores his staff, they in turn treat him like a king. He refers to good friends as “part of my family.” He is a compassionate, hard-working and charitable man who found you’re never too successful to maintain an interest in others. Therefore it is fitting that his two most notable contributions to radio and TV should contain the human element, which has almost disappeared from most current productions. “Truth or Consequences,” which he originated and brought to radio in 1939. was the near-beginning of the audience participation shows. People were caught off-guard, surprised and astonished at the wacky consequences for not correctly answering a silly question. It was good clean fun — audiences loved it. I “Truth or Consequences” continues to be seen today in 110 U.S. cities and in many foreign countries includ- Iing England, Spain and Japan. It was “T or C” that led the way for “This Is Your Life,” which was broadcast on radio and TV from 1948 to 1961. “This Is Your Life” contained more nostalgia than any other show in the history of television. Itwasforone individual, a flashback of his or her life for everyone to see. It prompted more tears than an onion-chopping session. Many fans will recall Edwards as the host for the TV version of “T or C” until he chose current host Bob Barker to take his place. Edwards also was the emcee for the entire radio and TV run of “This Is Your Life. Since 1961 Ed wards has carried on as executive producer of “T or C,” but last year he began to remember the bright lights and thought maybe the time was right to revive “This Is Your Life,” with himself as master of ceremonies. “I can’t remember when I didn’t work,” says Edwards who began his careerat 16 writing radio scripts. “My life has been happy, but career-wise I began to feel there was no pole in the tent. I need the discipline of being an emcee, it gives me stability. It won’t be a new experience, but it will be as exciting and i challenging as ever." The show is scheduled for syndication beginning next January and already Edwards is busy with preparation and new ideas. “I think the show can bridge the generation gap," he says. “As far as I'm concerned, people have never been that far apart, but the program is a perfect showcase for both generations. It offers a way to hasten the time when adults and youth can be of one mind,” he adds. Edwards plans to spotlight many youthful subjects along with the older folk. “Today’s youngsters have lived three times as much as we did. Many have made real contributions —social, artistic and intellectual —to our society. Perhaps some older people will see the behind the shaggy locks and take a look at the positive factors,” he says. “Conversely, the younger set might enjoy a candid view of their elders. The show will not be an expose of stars or news events. It will instead relate to the general public. Many well-known persons will be spotlighted. but that will not be the basis of the program. It will be, according to Edwards, “a sampling of America to show we have some pretty fantastic people. Probing for facts, figures and personalities from an individual’s past is notan easy task. Edwards will employ researchers, writers and other staff members who must use tact and secrecy. “You can’t start researching too early,” he says, “or the word is likely to get back to the person. Also, our staff can't put too much hope on one or two sources. Too many stories are changed by the time and in the telling. The staff isn’t unlike the FBI,” he laughs. 9 Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY Los Angeles Herald-Examiner TV WEEKLY
